What is the Legion of Mary?
The Legion of Mary is an Association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of all Graces. They have formed themselves into a Legion for service in the warfare which is perpetually waged by the Church against the world and its evil powers.
What is the aim of the Legion?
The object of the Legion of Mary, is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation, under ecclesiastical guidance, in Mary’s and the Church’s work of crushing the head of the serpent and advancing the reign of Christ.
In order to achieve this object, the spirit of each Legionary must seek to imitate that of Mary herself. Especially does the Legion aspire after her profound humility, her perfect obedience, her Angelical sweetness, her continual prayer, her universal mortification, her altogether spotless purity, her heroic patience, her heavenly wisdom, her self-sacrificing courageous love of God, and above all her faith. Thus, the Legion is able to bring Mary to the world through devotional prayer and a zealous attitude for spiritual works of mercy.
What works does the Legion undertake?
Some of the works commonly undertaken by the Legion include Visitation of the homes of the community, Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in homes, Visitation of the sick in hospitals, Catholic book-barrows, Public crowd contact – including public rosary’s and evangelisation, and Home Visitations of the Statue of Our Lady.
What Types of Memberships are there?
There are two options of membership; Active and Auxiliary.
Active members are required to attend the weekly meetings, to do a minimum of 2 hours of Apostolic work each week with a partner, to recite the Legion prayer – the Catena daily, and to follow the system of the Legion according to the Handbook.
The duties of Auxiliary members do not include the attendance to the weekly meetings. Instead, the Auxiliary is required to recite daily the Holy Rosary and the prayers contained in the Legion Tessera leaflet, for the intentions of Our Blessed Lady. Despite not undertaking works, the Auxiliary member offers the Legion the priceless gift of their prayers, to further the devotion of all its members and the success of the Legion.
How can I join?
We encourage all members of the community, of all ages, to join the ranks of the Legion, as either Active or Auxiliary members, to help further the reign of Christ here on earth.
Our Legion meetings are held every Monday at 6:30pm, at Sts Peter and Paul Church, Garran.
